Has anyone heard of a company called Prospect Solution? they claim to be an academic research company that employs 2:1 graduates and above to write research pieces on various subjects; and various graduate employment sites have recommended them... but I applied and they've accepted my initial application; so naturally i don't trust them :S Has anyone else heard of them? working from home, writing about literature and films, getting paid without having to talk to people... sounds a little bit TOO perfect :P |

We saw this when we were driving home from devon... I'd have thought the west country would be trying to get away from the whole creepy murderous pagan image myself. |

I ran out of space and had to pile a few older and less frequented tomes beneath my bed alas; but the shelved collection as it stands is thus (in an ugly and disorganised list):
( BOOOOKS )
I'm somewhat suprised that i have only 285 books - i thought i had more. oh well. |

Also saw Mirrormask which felt like a trippier and not quite as endearing version of Labyrinth - kind of spliced with Miyazaki's non-linear dream gimmicks. |

My room looks like a particularly literate burglar has ransacked it and left hurriedly in disgust.

On the train today i realised why redrafting is essential to writing. The way i see it, successful writing (in the sense of writing a satisfying and well-written piece as opposed to a financially successful piece) depends a lot on a naturalistic representation of events, or at least a certain naturalistic progression of events given a freedom missing in the rigorous constraints of over-structured pieces. If the writer gives his characters and world the freedom of interaction which makes the logic of the fictional concordant with the logic of the real world; the reader can be drawn in more thoroughly than in a text reliant on careful mapping and Joycean schema. This freedom is unfortunately at odds with the nature of fiction however, as the logical interaction of cause and effect is reversed in any narrative, and only the significant is reflected; the survivor is followed and predestined to survive because by virtue of the fact that it is his story; the reader knows the essential outcome. Redrafting then, allows the writer to create 'real world' freedom for the characters, while also supplying sufficient knowledge of the narrative outcome to sprinkle foreshadowing, dramatic irony and the other elements of satisfying writing throughout the piece. I think i want to start writing again; i got too wrapped up in the audience and forgot quite how much fun and freedom it offered. I also realise that it is a little ironic that a post about writing should be so badly written, but it's late and there's a moth molesting me (and a maiden rubbing my feet) |

This'll prolly only be of interest to the Lovecraft lovers on my list.
I randomly picked up one of the omnibus editions of Lovecraft short stories, and decided to read The thing on the doorstep; which i read a long time ago and remembered liking alot; despite not remembering much detail. At the beginning of the story, the narrator describes Edward Derby, and there's Lovecraft staring right out of the page. It's a fairly close similarity and i was wondering if any of you know any other characters he formed in his image? I'd be interested to see if this gets any responses; i've strayed from the fold and feel i must return to the tentacles. |
